Mary J. Rollman was the second keynote of the day for our spring 2017 herNetwork conference. Mary has over 21 years of experience in her career field, so we were all excited to hear what she had to say about career advice. Throughout her presentation, she kept mentioning the aspect of working hard. Working hard is important to everyone, but Mary really made a point to tell everyone to work hard in their careers. It makes sense- the only way to get ahead is to do things that your colleagues may not want to do. Never say “that isn’t my job, I can’t do that.” If your boss needs something done, you should jump at the opportunity. This is how you get noticed, and this is how you get ahead.
While working hard is always important, Mary also stressed how important it is to slow down and take notice of the experiences happening around you. This is your life, and you need to be present and in the moment. You must always remember that your reputation is at stake. One of my favorite parts of her keynote was when she told read us the quote “it takes 20 years to build a reputation, and five minutes to ruin it…” Even though your reputation is at stake, it is also important to make mistakes.
